Joining The Lab
Because I am an earlier career researcher, I am still in the process of building a full lab. To formally join the lab, you can apply to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical/Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program. I am also happy to supervise UAB undergraduates interested in pursuing careers in psychology/medicine. Regarding joining the lab as part of the Ph.D. program, make sure you consider yourself a "good fit" before applying. To be a good fit, you should be interested in clinical practice AND research. I am happy to guide you towards a career in either direction, but being a Ph.D. student in clinical psychology means being good at both. Regarding clinical/research interests, in your statement of purpose be sure to articulate a detailed interest in at least one of the following areas:
ACT/Third-Wave Behavioral Mental Health Interventions
Common Factors and/or Process-Based Therapy Research
Treatment Efficacy (Primarily Counseling and Medication Considerations)
Meta-Analysis
LGBTQ+ Mental Health Disparities
Compulsive Sexual Behavior
Problematic Pornography Viewing
Also note, being a Ph.D. student in the Clinical/Medical Psychology program is roughly a five year commitment (including the mandatory 1-year pre-doctoral clinical internship). Funding is provided via RA, TA, and/or Fellowship to admitted students in good standing. Funding is also among the best in the country. Folks from historically marginalized backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
I anticipate recruiting one new Ph.D. student for the fall 2025 start date.
Meta-analysis is a primary research approach in the lab. Undergraduate RAs will be expected to help us review/code studies, graduate students will be expected to manage/develop meta-analyses of their own. Original clinical trial research is also a developing primary aim specific to graduate students, who are encouraged/expected to design interventions that will be employed in the lab.
